The scope of work for this two (2) story Fire and Police Station Complex included the design and renovation of the existing (historic) Fire Station and the design and construction of a new Police Station addition at the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois.
Features of the complex include:

  • Eight (8) Apparatus Bays for Fire and Emergency Response Vehicles

  • Specialized Systems include an Overhead Vehicle Exhaust System with
    Automatic Disconnect

  • Fire Equipment Storage

  • Fire Extinguisher Recharge Area

  • Infra-Red Traffic Light Control System

  • Breathing Apparatus Recharge Area

  • HAZMAT / Decontamination Rooms & Showers

  • Full-Service Kitchen Facility for Fire Personnel

  • Dormitory / Sleeping Quarters for Fire Personnel

  • Laundry Room

  • An Activity / Exercise Room Shared by Police and Fire Personnel

  • Administration Space for Fire and Police Personnel

  • Bullet Proof Glass/Glazing

  • Arms Vault

  • Conference/Training Room(S)

  • Filing Area for Police Reports

  • Holding Area

  • Evidence Lockers

  • Separate Offices for the Security Unit

  • Break Room(s), Restrooms, Showers, and Locker Rooms

The exterior of the building consists of brick, split-face CMU, and gables. Supporting features include a retaining wall, emergency generator, site utilities and services, storm water drainage system, parking, paving, access drives, sidewalks, exterior lighting, and security fencing.

The renovation and addition were compliant with the installation’s designation as a National Historic Landmark, and SGS coordinated with the Illinois State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) throughout the design and construction process.
