Renovate / Repair Bldg. 6426 Hangar 3

This project consists of repairing and renovating the southern portion of Building 6426 at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. Building 6426 contains three (3) areas: Hangar No. 3, Hangar No. 4, and an area called the “Pylon”, which is a lower area that separates Hangars 3 and 4. Hangar 4 currently serves as the flight line Fire Station.

SGS provided design-build services to fully renovate Hangar 3, a 2-story 28,000 SF Facility. The renovation completely remodels the 1930 era hangar to a more modern and useful office space for use by the 11th Bomb Squadron. Primary areas in Building 6426 include the following:

Administrative Offices
Commander Offices
Multiple Laboratories
Multiple Conference Rooms
Large Auditorium
Simulator Rooms
Training Rooms
Workstations
Weapons & Tactics Area
Secured and Unsecured Storage Areas
Restrooms / Showers

Building Renovations Included:

Abatement of various hazardous materials
Removing and replacing the EIFS cladding
Removing and replacing all exterior doors and windows with blast resistant windows and doors
Saw cutting and removing sections of the concrete floor slab to install new concrete footings and steel columns to support a new structural steel / concrete second floor
Constructing handicap accessible ramps at three (3) entry locations
Installing a new Hydraulic Elevator
Removing, and replacing all walls, ceilings, doors, frames, stairs, flooring, second level wood flooring, wood columns, concrete pedestal, and other finish items inside the building
Installing two (2) new stairwells
Building Systems include all new HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical Power, Lighting,
Communication & Data (NIPRNET and SIPRNET), Security and Access Control, Fire Alarm and Mass Notification, and Fire Sprinkler Systems.

Building 6426 is listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places and is located within the Historic District of Barksdale AFB. SGS worked closely with the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure guidelines were met to keep and preserve the historical aspect of the Hangar.
